Features of the Wood Chisel

65Mn Manganese Steel

The blade is made from steel with a manganese content of 0.65%, which gives a hardness of 60-62 HRC. This material is characterised by its resistance to abrasion and its ability to hold a sharp cutting angle for a long time. 65Mn steel is used in tools that require a combination of hardness and impact resistance.

Handle with Metal Insert

A transparent plastic handle reinforced with a metal insert at the front. This construction allows the chisel to be struck with a mallet without any risk of the handle material cracking. The transparency makes it possible to observe the condition of the metal insert and to detect any damage at an early stage.

Milled Blade Edges

The blade has precisely milled side edges, which ensures an even cut and stable guidance of the tool through the material. The milling process removes the unevenness left by forging and makes it possible to achieve a sharpening angle suited to woodworking.

Polished Blade Surface

The working surface of the blade has been polished, which reduces the coefficient of friction as it penetrates the wood. The smooth surface also limits the build-up of resin and moisture, making the tool easier to clean after use.

Applications of the 12 mm Chisel

  • Carving details in softwood and hardwood
  • Cutting hinge recesses in door joinery
  • Forming mortise-and-tenon carpentry joints
  • Removing excess material after sawing
  • Smoothing the inside of holes and recesses
  • Trimming the edges of veneer and edge banding
  • Cleaning out grooves in wooden components
  • Fitting components during furniture restoration

Choosing the Chisel Width for the Type of Work

A 12 mm chisel is a universal width for most joinery work. It is used for standard-sized hinge recesses and for carving medium-sized elements. For precise details, 6-8 mm chisels work better, while for thick structural elements it is worth considering widths of 18-25 mm.

Use and Maintenance

Before starting work, check the sharpness of the blade. A blunt blade requires more force and can lead to the tool slipping uncontrollably. Sharpening is carried out on stones with a grit of 1000 to 6000, maintaining a sharpening angle of around 25-30 degrees.

When striking the chisel, use a wooden or rubber mallet. If a steel hammer is used, the blows should be directed centrally onto the metal insert in the handle. Avoid angled blows, which can damage the joint between the blade and the handle.

After finishing work, clean the blade of wood dust and protect it with a thin layer of machine oil. Store the tool in a dry place, protecting the cutting edge with a plastic cover or a wooden block.

Personal Protective Equipment

When working with a chisel, it is advisable to wear work gloves to protect against cuts and safety glasses to protect against flying wood chips. When working intensively with wood containing natural resins, it is worth using an FFP2-class dust mask.
