How to choose a pipe wrench for the pipe diameter
The 2" marking specifies the maximum outside diameter of the pipe the wrench can work with. In practice this corresponds to a pipe with a nominal diameter of DN 50 (50 mm). Before buying, check the actual outside diameter of the pipe – pipe wrenches are selected on the basis of this parameter, not the inside diameter.
Use and maintenance
Before starting work, set the jaw opening using the screw mechanism, adjusting it to the diameter of the workpiece. The wrench is placed on the pipe or coupling and the jaws are tightened until a secure grip is obtained. The wrench should be turned in the direction of movement of the movable jaw – this increases the clamping force during use.
After finishing work, clean the jaws of dirt and dry the tool. The adjustment mechanism should be lubricated periodically with maintenance grease, which prevents the thread from seizing and extends the life of the wrench. Storing it in a dry place protects the coating from corrosion.
Differences between types of pipe wrench
The Type S (Swedish) design has a simple construction with one movable jaw, which makes it more durable and easier to maintain. The American pattern has a more complex mechanism with two movable jaws, which can provide better centring on the pipe but requires more frequent maintenance.
