3-Piece Metal Drill Bit Set 22–25 mm YT-44626 YATO

A set of three HSS 4241 twist drill bits in 22 mm, 24 mm and 25 mm diameters for drilling steel, stainless steel and structural steel. The bits feature a 135° Split Point tip that eliminates the need for centre punching.

Technical features of HSS 4241 drill bits

HSS 4241 high-speed steel

The HSS 4241 designation refers to a high-speed steel with a cobalt content of 8%, which increases resistance to working temperatures of up to 600°C. This composition maintains the hardness of the cutting edge when working with high-strength materials such as structural or stainless steel.

135° Split Point tip

The cross-ground tip with a 135° point angle eliminates the tendency of the drill bit to wander across the surface of the material. This geometry allows drilling to start without prior centre punching, which shortens preparation time and improves the accuracy of holes drilled in steel components.

Heat and swarf evacuation

Spiral flutes with an optimised pitch carry swarf out of the hole while dissipating the heat generated during cutting. This design prevents the flutes from clogging and the tool from overheating, which is crucial when drilling large-diameter holes.

1/2 inch shank

The 1/2" (12.7 mm) shank requires a drill chuck with a suitable clamping range or an adapter. A shank of this size provides secure holding of large-diameter drill bits in drills with a minimum power of 800–1000 W.

Applications for 22–25 mm metal drill bits

  • Drilling holes for M20–M24 bolts in steel structures
  • Preparing mounting holes in box sections and beams
  • Industrial installations requiring large-diameter bolted connections
  • Workshop work involving the repair and modification of steel components
  • Drilling stainless steel in the production of corrosion-resistant components
  • Drilling holes in cold-rolled steel of increased hardness
  • Installing fasteners in machine and equipment assemblies
  • Renovation and upgrading of existing metal structures

Selecting drilling parameters

When drilling 22–25 mm holes in steel, a speed of 150–300 rpm is recommended, depending on the hardness of the material. Lower speeds are used for stainless and hardened steel. A cutting fluid must be used, or the drilling point lubricated with metalworking oil, which extends tool life and improves the surface quality of the hole.

Use and maintenance

Before drilling, check that the drill's power is sufficient for work with 22–25 mm drill bits. The recommended minimum power is 800 W for structural steel and 1000 W for stainless steel. The drill should have a chuck with a clamping range of at least 13 mm, or an adapter for 1/2" shanks.

During operation, apply steady pressure without excessive force, which can lead to overheating and damage to the cutting edges. Regularly withdrawing the drill bit from the hole clears swarf and allows cutting fluid to reach the cutting zone.

After use, clean the drill bits of swarf and cutting fluid residue, then protect them against corrosion with a thin layer of machine oil. Storing them in the supplied case protects the cutting edges from mechanical damage.

Sharpening HSS drill bits

HSS 4241 drill bits can be sharpened repeatedly using a drill bit sharpener or a bench grinder with the appropriate jig. During sharpening, maintain a relief angle of 118–135° and keep both cutting edges symmetrical. Overheating the material during grinding causes the steel to lose its temper, so water or grinding oil cooling should be used.
