The adjustable HSS reamer is a cutting tool designed for precision finishing of cylindrical holes. Model YT-28961 allows the working diameter to be adjusted across a 21-23 mm range, so it can be matched to dimensional tolerance requirements without the need for a set of fixed-diameter tools.
The adjusting mechanism allows stepless variation of the diameter across a 2 mm range. This makes it possible to compensate for tool wear and to tailor the tool to the specific tolerance requirements of the hole. Adjustment is made by turning the adjusting ring, which moves the cutting blades along a tapered body.
The designation HSS 4241 refers to a steel grade with a composition of 1% carbon, 4% chromium, 2% vanadium, 4% molybdenum and 1% tungsten. This composition gives a hardness of 63-65 HRC after heat treatment, together with resistance to abrasion and to temperatures of up to 600°C during cutting. The material performs well when machining structural steels, cast iron and non-ferrous alloys.
The shank diameter determines compatibility with drill chucks and machine chucks. At 13.5 mm, the shank fits standard Morse taper sockets and drill chucks with a capacity of up to 16 mm. The overall length of 193 mm provides stability when machining holes up to 100 mm deep.
The adjustable reamer has several cutting blades evenly spaced around its circumference, which ensures that the tool is self-centring and minimises radial runout. The lead angle of the blades and the finish of the cutting surfaces affect the roughness of the machined hole, making it possible to achieve Ra 1.6-3.2 µm.

For structural steel the recommended cutting speed is 8-12 m/min, for cast iron 10-15 m/min, and for aluminium 20-30 m/min. The feed rate should be 0.3-0.8 mm/rev, depending on the required surface roughness. Machining should be carried out with generous cooling using emulsion or cutting oil.
Before reaming, the hole should be prepared by drilling or turning with an allowance of 0.2-0.4 mm per side for diameters of 21-23 mm. Too large an allowance overloads the blades and degrades the surface quality, while too small an allowance makes it impossible to remove the marks left by the previous operation.
The 13.5 mm shank can be mounted in drill chucks with a capacity of 1.5-16 mm, in ER32 collet chucks, or directly in Morse reducing sleeves. When machining on bench and pillar drills, guides should be used to keep the tool aligned with the hole.
After use, the reamer should be cleaned of swarf and cutting fluid residues, and the blades then protected with a thin film of protective oil. It should be stored in a way that prevents the blades from coming into contact with other tools, which could chip them.
Regular checking of the condition of the blades allows wear to be detected early. Symptoms that indicate sharpening is needed are increased roughness of the machined surface, an increase in cutting torque, and a characteristic squeal during operation. Sharpening adjustable reamers requires specialised equipment and should be entrusted to specialist tool workshops.
When reaming, safety goggles must be worn, and gloves should be worn when fitting and removing the tool. The rotating cutting portion poses a risk of catching on clothing or hair. Make sure that the workpiece is securely clamped and the tool correctly seated in the chuck before starting the machine.
