KD12529 is a workshop tool kit designed for removing broken spark plugs from the cylinder head. A sheared spark plug — particularly when its threaded section is left behind in the thread — is one of the harder faults to put right on your own. The kit contains tips in a range of sizes to suit the spark plug sizes commonly used in petrol engines.
Made from high-grade steel, the tools hold their strength under the high torque loads needed to shift a seized or corroded plug. Steel that resists deformation keeps the risk of tool damage during use to a minimum.
The kit includes tips to suit a range of spark plug sizes. This lets you work on engines from different manufacturers without having to source extra tools. Before starting work, check the plug's thread size in the vehicle documentation.
The tips' geometry allows work in the engine bay, where space is tight because of ancillaries, wiring and covers. Particularly important in multi-valve engines, where the plugs sit deep in the cylinder head.
All the necessary parts come in a single kit. No extra adapters or holders need to be bought for standard use. The kit works with standard 1/2" torque wrenches and extension bars.
The tool is intended for the situation where a spark plug shears off while being unscrewed — most often as a result of thread corrosion or over-tightening. The extractor grips the remaining part of the plug from inside or outside the thread and allows it to be removed without damaging the thread in the head. Before use, soak the area with penetrating fluid and leave it for ten to fifteen minutes.

The spark plug size (thread diameter and pitch) is given in the vehicle handbook or on the packaging of the original plugs. The most common sizes are M14x1.25 and M12x1.25. Before buying the kit, make sure it includes a tip that matches the plug size in the engine concerned.
The engine should be cold before you start — working on a hot cylinder head increases the risk of further thread damage. After use, clean the tools of oil and metal swarf and store them in a dry place. Steel parts are prone to corrosion on prolonged contact with moisture, so it is advisable to oil them lightly before putting them away for storage.
