YATO carpenter's pencils are professional tools for marking and drawing on wood and wood-based materials. The set contains 12 pencils, each 175 mm long, with a flat HB graphite lead.
The 2 x 5 mm lead width produces a broad, clear line that is visible on bare wood and wood-based materials. The flat shape allows both thin edges and wider marks to be drawn by changing the angle at which the pencil is held.
HB (Hard-Black) graphite strikes a balance between a soft and a hard lead. It provides good line visibility without cutting too deeply into the wood surface, which makes the marks easier to remove afterwards.
The oval cross-section of the wooden barrel stops the pencil rolling off sloping work surfaces. The shape provides a stable grip and control when marking structural components precisely.
The red lacquered barrel protects the wood against moisture and dirt encountered in workshop conditions. The lacquer makes the tool easier to keep clean and increases its durability.

HB hardness is the standard for carpenter's pencils because it balances the durability of the line with the ability to remove the mark later. Graphite that is too soft (B, 2B) would smudge and score the surface, while a harder grade (H, 2H) would require more pressure and be harder to sharpen in workshop conditions.
YATO carpenter's pencils should be sharpened with a knife or a pencil sharpener designed for flat leads. Regular sharpening ensures precise marking. The lacquered barrel should be protected from prolonged contact with water and aggressive solvents, which can damage the protective layer.
The oval shape prevents the pencil rolling off work surfaces, but it is still worth storing the pencils in a dedicated container or a compartmented pouch. The flat graphite lead is more resistant to breaking than a round one, but it still needs to be handled carefully if dropped from a height.
