Chainsaw File Guide for 4.0 mm Round File YT-85044 YATO

A galvanised steel file guide for sharpening chainsaw chains. The tool keeps a 4.0 mm round file precisely on line when sharpening the cutting teeth of the chain.

File diameter4.0 mm
Compatibility3/8" chains
Sharpening angles25°, 30°, 35°
MaterialGalvanised steel

Features of the chainsaw file guide

Adjustable sharpening angle

The guide can be set to three sharpening angles: 25°, 30° and 35°. The sharpening angle determines how aggressively the chain cuts — a smaller angle (25°) is used for cutting hardwood, a larger one (35°) for softwood. Adjustment lets you match the sharpening to the job in hand.

Precise file guidance

The guide's construction holds the 4.0 mm round file steady during sharpening, preventing it from wandering and preventing uneven wear on the teeth. Consistent guidance gives every tooth on the chain the same sharpening angle and depth, which translates into an even cut.

Compatibility with 3/8" chains

The 3/8" figure is the chain pitch — the distance between three consecutive rivets divided by two. The YT-85044 guide is matched to this standard pitch, used on saws from 1.5 to 3.5 hp. The 1.5 mm gauge corresponds to typical chains for domestic and semi-professional saws.

Galvanised steel

The zinc coating protects the steel from corrosion when working in damp conditions and in contact with wood filings. The material also resists mechanical distortion when the guide is clamped to the chain with the screw clamp.

  • Sharpening chains on petrol saws from 1.5 to 3.5 hp
  • Maintaining chains on electric saws with 3/8" pitch
  • Restoring sharpness to chains in forestry workshops
  • Servicing garden machinery
  • Sharpening chains after heavy work in hardwood
  • Routine sharpening for household use
  • Professional sharpening in service workshops

How to check file guide compatibility

Before buying, check the chain pitch — this is given on the chain packaging or in the saw's manual. A 3/8" pitch (9.32 mm) is the standard for domestic and semi-professional saws. The drive link gauge (1.5 mm) must match the groove in the saw's guide bar. The file diameter (4.0 mm) is chosen to suit the size of the cutting tooth.

Use and maintenance

The guide is clamped onto the chain with a screw clamp, which holds the tool steady during sharpening. Before starting, set the sharpening angle to suit the type of wood and the chain manufacturer's recommendations. During sharpening the guide holds the round file at a constant angle, so the same amount of material is removed from each tooth.

After sharpening, clean metal and wood filings off the guide. The screw mechanism needs occasional lubrication to keep the clamp working smoothly. Storing it in a dry place extends the life of the zinc coating.

Sharpening safety

Sharpen the chain with the saw switched off and the power disconnected. Work gloves are recommended because of the sharp edges of the cutting teeth. Push the round file away from you, keeping the pressure steady. Check the condition of the guide regularly — damage can lead to uneven sharpening.
