Chain compatibility — what to look out for
Chainsaw files are made in various diameters (most commonly 4 mm, 4.8 mm and 5.5 mm), matched to the chain pitch. Before use, check the chain marking on the saw housing or in the instruction manual and make sure the file diameter matches the one required for that chain. This information is usually given by the kit manufacturer or is available on the product page.
Use and maintenance
Before sharpening, secure the chain — most conveniently by applying the chain brake or locking the drive sprocket. The kit's guide is placed on the chain teeth as instructed, and an equal number of file strokes is then made on each cutting tooth. After sharpening, check and if necessary adjust the depth gauge setting, which controls the thickness of the chip — depth gauges set too high reduce the efficiency of even a sharpened chain.
Store the file in the supplied pouch, protecting the cutting teeth from damage and contamination. After each use, clean metal filings off it with a brush.
