A metal woodworking template for accurately marking out dovetail joints in timber construction. The tool features two dovetail ratios, allowing quick and accurate marking out in both hardwood and softwood.
The 1:5 ratio (equivalent to an angle of approximately 11.3°) is intended for hardwood, where joints require a larger contact area. The 1:8 ratio (approximately 7.1°) is used in softwood, providing suitable dovetail spacing at the lower strength of the material.
Metal construction guarantees resistance to mechanical deformation and edge wear. The template retains its dimensional accuracy even under intensive use in a joiner's workshop, which translates into the consistency of the joints produced.
The small size makes the template easy to handle when marking out components of various widths. The tool takes up little space in a toolbox and can easily be stored alongside other woodworking tools.
Clearly marked graduations allow the dovetail angle to be transferred accurately onto the edge of a timber component. The template speeds up the marking out of a series of joints, eliminating the need to calculate and measure the angles repeatedly.

Used when working with oak, beech, ash and other dense species. The wider dovetail angle (approximately 11.3°) provides a larger gluing area and better stress transfer in hard material. The joint is more resistant to being pulled apart under load.
Intended for pine, spruce, poplar and other soft species. The narrower angle (approximately 7.1°) compensates for the lower mechanical strength of the wood, increasing the dovetail spacing while maintaining adequate joint strength. It prevents the material from breaking out during assembly.
Before starting work, check that the edges of the template are free from burrs and contamination that could affect marking out accuracy. The template is placed against the edge of the timber component, pressed against the reference surface, and lines are then drawn along the graduations with a carpenter's pencil or marking knife.
After finishing work, the template should be cleaned of wood residue and dust, and then protected against moisture. The metal surface can be periodically treated with a thin layer of machine oil, which prevents corrosion and makes it easier to slide the tool over the wood.
Storing the template in a dry place extends its service life and keeps the graduations legible. Avoiding knocks and drops protects the measuring edges from damage, which is essential for maintaining the accuracy of the tool.
