Technical features of the tin snips

English pattern forged construction

Forging technology produces a uniform material structure with no weak welded points. English pattern snips have a simple jaw design, which translates into greater durability and easier sharpening compared with compound constructions.

Induction-hardened jaws, 58-61 HRC

A hardness of 58-61 HRC on the Rockwell scale means a hardened working surface that keeps the cutting edges sharp over a long service life. Induction hardening allows precise control of the hardening depth while retaining a flexible core.

Handles with vinyl grips

Hard, smooth vinyl reduces friction during use, which lowers hand fatigue when cutting larger areas. The grips provide a secure hold even when wearing work gloves.

Versatile cutting direction

The ability to make straight, left and right cuts with a single tool removes the need for separate snips for different directions. Particularly useful when cutting out holes and complex shapes in sheet metal.

Applications of YATO tin snips

  • Cutting cold-rolled steel sheet in a sheet metal workshop
  • Working stainless steel sheet during installation work
  • Trimming steel components during renovation work
  • Cutting cut-outs in sheet metal
  • Fitting components when installing roof coverings
  • Cutting sheet metal profiles and thin-walled sections
  • Finishing work in the production of sheet metal components
  • Trimming material during vehicle body repairs

Cutting thickness parameters - practical significance

Difference in cutting thickness for different materials

The snips can cut cold-rolled steel sheet up to 0.79 mm, but stainless steel only up to 0.45 mm. This difference results from the higher strength and hardness of stainless steel. Exceeding the maximum thickness leads to rapid blunting of the cutting edges or damage to the jaws. For thicker sheet, use a guillotine or lever shears.

Rockwell hardness scale (HRC)

A value of 58-61 HRC means hardness comparable to professional cutting tools. For comparison: typical knife blades are 55-58 HRC, while metal drill bits are 62-65 HRC. Hardness below 55 HRC causes rapid blunting; above 65 HRC the material becomes more brittle.

Maintenance and use

Before first use, check the jaw adjustment - correctly adjusted snips should show no play at the pivot bolt, yet must still open smoothly. After use, remove metal debris from the cutting edges and apply a thin film of oil to protect against corrosion.

During cutting, avoid lateral movement of the jaws, which can damage the edges. Each cut should be made with a full opening and closing of the snips - short 'nibbling' strokes produce uneven edges and accelerate blade wear.

If the jaws become noticeably blunt, they can be sharpened using fine-grit grinding wheels or whetstones. Sharpen at the original cutting-edge angle, applying even pressure along the full length of the jaw.
