A metal drill bit made from M35 HSS-CO high-speed steel with a 5% cobalt content, manufactured to DIN 338. The double-ground 125° point allows drilling without first centre-punching the workpiece.
The 5% cobalt content increases the hardness and heat resistance of the steel. The drill bit retains a sharp cutting edge at temperatures of up to 600°C, allowing materials with a hardness of up to 900 N/mm² to be drilled without any loss of cutting performance.
The double-ground point enables the drill bit to self-centre in the material without the need for prior centre punching. The 125° angle is ideal for structural and alloy steels, reducing resistance as the bit enters the material.
Precision grinding of the flutes improves the dimensional accuracy of the hole and the efficiency of swarf removal. The smooth flute surface minimises friction and heat build-up in the tool during use.
The standard straight shank is compatible with hand drills, bench drills and machine chucks. The DIN 338 standard guarantees dimensional consistency and correct centring.

HSS-CO drill bits contain 5% cobalt, which increases their hardness and resistance to high temperatures compared with standard HSS drill bits. This allows harder materials to be drilled and higher cutting speeds to be used. Cobalt drill bits stay sharp for longer than standard HSS bits, making them an economical choice for frequent metal drilling.
Before drilling, mark the drilling point – although the double-ground point aids self-centring, centre punching improves accuracy. The use of a coolant or cutting oil is recommended, particularly when drilling stainless steel and difficult-to-machine alloys.
The rotational speed should be matched to the hardness of the material: around 20–30 m/min for structural steel and 10–15 m/min for stainless steel. Too high a speed shortens the life of the drill bit, while too low a speed can cause it to rub.
After use, the drill bit should be cleaned of swarf and protected from moisture. Storing it in a dedicated case or tube protects the cutting edges from mechanical damage.
HSS-CO drill bits can be sharpened using a standard drill bit sharpener. The original 125° point angle and the symmetry of the cutting edges must be maintained. It is important to avoid overheating the material during sharpening – excessive temperature can cause the cobalt alloy to lose its properties.
