A 7-inch (175 mm) German pattern pipe wrench designed for installing and removing plumbing systems and pipework components. The German design features jaws set at 90° to the handle, which provides greater clamping force in a confined working space.

German pattern design
Jaws set perpendicular to the handle allow work in tight spaces where the angle of attack matters. This geometry increases the effective torque with less effort, which is important on seized pipe joints.
Hardened carbon steel jaws
A hardness of 47-53 HRC on the Rockwell scale provides resistance to deformation under heavy loads. The jaw material withstands repeated use on galvanised and steel components without losing its working grip.
Screw adjustment of the jaw opening
The screw mechanism allows smooth adjustment of the jaw opening up to 45 mm. A maximum jaw depth of 20 mm allows work with DN15-DN40 pipes and the nuts of flange joints.

Differences between the German and Swedish patterns
German pattern wrenches have jaws set at 90° to the handle, which gives better control in confined spaces. The Swedish pattern (with a 45° angle) provides greater clamping force when loosening seized joints. The choice depends on the specific task – the German pattern is well suited to installing pipework under washbasins and behind radiators, where there is limited room to manoeuvre.
Use and maintenance
Before starting work, check the condition of the jaws and the adjustment mechanism. A pipe wrench should not be used as a hammer or a lever. After finishing work, it is worth cleaning the tool of contaminants and protecting the adjustment mechanism with a drop of machine oil.
The 45 mm jaw capacity corresponds to the outside diameters of steel pipes up to DN32 and to M24-M30 nuts. When selecting a wrench for a specific task, consider not only the pipe diameter but also the available working space – a length of 175 mm requires a minimum of 200 mm of clear space for a full turn.
Jaw hardness and tool durability
A value of 47-53 HRC denotes hardness on the Rockwell scale for steel. This range provides a compromise between wear resistance and impact strength. Jaws with lower hardness wear more quickly, while higher values increase the risk of cracking under overload.
