A set of three hand taps for cutting M14 metric threads in holes. Made from HSS M2 high-speed steel to DIN 352, they deliver precise threading in non-ferrous metals, non-alloy steels and cast irons.
The HSS M2 (high-speed steel) grade contains molybdenum and tungsten additions that increase hardness and wear resistance. This means threads can be cut repeatedly without the cutting edges losing their sharpness, which translates into a longer tool life than ordinary carbon steels.
The set contains a taper tap (long chamfer), a second tap (medium chamfer) and a plug tap (short chamfer). This arrangement allows the thread to be cut in stages, which reduces cutting resistance and prevents the tool from breaking, particularly when machining harder materials.
Taps made to DIN 352 have precisely defined dimensional tolerances and flute geometry. This guarantees that the thread produced matches standardised M14 bolts and nuts, which is important in mechanical applications where threaded joints have to mate correctly.
An overall length of 80 mm and a thread length of 30 mm provide stability during use and allow threads to be cut in holes of varying depth. The shank can be mounted in standard tap wrenches of the appropriate capacity.

Before cutting an M14 thread, drill the hole with a 12 mm drill bit (for an M14 metric thread the standard core diameter is 11.835 mm and the recommended hole diameter is 12.0-12.1 mm). The hole should be perpendicular to the surface and free from burrs at the edges.
Start with the taper tap, which enters the hole and centres itself more easily thanks to its long chamfer. Then use the second tap, and finally the plug tap to achieve the full thread profile. Turn the tool clockwise, backing it off a quarter turn every half turn to break the swarf.
When threading, use a suitable lubricant: machine oil for steel, cutting fluid for aluminium, paraffin or oil for brass. Lubrication reduces friction, carries heat away and extends tap life, while at the same time improving the quality of the thread produced.
When you have finished, clean the metal swarf off the taps, ideally with a brass brush. Store them in a dry place, protected from moisture. Check the condition of the cutting edges regularly – blunt or damaged taps need reconditioning or replacement.
