A set of three hand taps for cutting metric M24 threads in through holes and blind holes. The tools are made from HSS high-speed steel and are intended for use on steel, cast iron and non-ferrous metals.
The set contains a taper tap (first), an intermediate tap (second) and a bottoming tap (finishing). This arrangement allows the thread to be cut gradually, which reduces the load on the tool and prevents breakage in hard materials. Each tap has a different lead geometry, from tapered to almost flat.
HSS (high-speed steel) offers a hardness of 62–65 HRC and good wear resistance. HSS taps keep their cutting edges sharp even with prolonged use and can be run without cooling in most applications.
Nominal diameter 24 mm with a standard pitch of 3.0 mm. M24 threads are used in medium- and heavy-duty mechanical assemblies – in industrial machinery, hydraulic equipment and fasteners for large assemblies.
Hand taps require a correctly sized tap wrench. Guiding the tap by hand gives full control over the cutting process, which matters for threads in hard-to-reach places or in materials that need to be handled with care.

Before cutting an M24 thread, drill a 21.0 mm hole (for a 3.0 mm pitch). The hole must be perpendicular to the surface and free from burrs. Chamfering the hole entry makes it easier to start the tap and reduces the risk of it binding.
Start with the taper tap (first), which has a long tapered lead and removes around 60% of the material. The intermediate tap (second) follows, removing around 30%, and the process is finished with the bottoming tap, which sizes the thread to its nominal dimensions.
When cutting threads in steel, use a tapping oil or a cutting fluid emulsion. For aluminium, paraffin or machine oil can be used. Grey cast iron can be tapped dry. Clearing swarf regularly by reversing the tap prevents it from binding.
