HSS 6542 twist drill bit, 1.5 mm diameter, with a 1/4" hex shank, designed for drilling in stainless, structural and cold-rolled steel. Manufactured from high-speed steel by hot rolling, with a 135° split point that removes the need for centre punching.
High-speed steel with 5% molybdenum, 6% tungsten and 2% vanadium added delivers a hardness of 63-65 HRC. As a result, the drill bit keeps a sharp cutting edge even when working with materials with a tensile strength of up to 900 N/mm². It operates at temperatures of up to 600°C without losing its cutting properties.
The specially ground tip eliminates the central web of the drill bit, which allows drilling to begin without centre punching first. The 135° angle reduces the pressure required to start cutting and prevents the bit from slipping on the metal surface.
Hex shanks (6.35 mm) fit impact drivers, cordless drills and standard quick-release chucks. The hexagonal profile stops the bit from turning in the chuck during use, which is crucial at small diameters.
Surface and edge grinding to DIN 338 guarantees consistent dimensions and geometry. The drill bit produces holes to H13 tolerance, which corresponds to an accuracy of ±0.014 mm for a 1.5 mm diameter.

1/4" hex shanks are standard on cordless drills and impact drivers. The drill bit fits quick-release chucks without the need for a chuck key. Check that your tool has variable speed control – for a 1.5 mm diameter in steel, the recommended speed is 2000-3000 rpm.
The rotational speed for structural steel is around 2500 rpm; for stainless steel it should be reduced to 1500-2000 rpm. The feed should be steady, without excessive pressure – a 1.5 mm drill bit has limited rigidity and may snap under too much axial force.
When drilling stainless steel, a coolant or lubricant is recommended, as it extends the life of the cutting edge and improves hole quality. If no fluid is available, drilling can be paused periodically to let the drill bit cool down.
The HSS 6542 drill bit can be re-sharpened using a diamond grinding wheel, maintaining a 135° point angle and edge symmetry. After sharpening, check the split point geometry – incorrect grinding can cause the drill bit to slip.
HSS drill bits should be stored in a dry place, protected from contact with other tools. Cutting edges can be damaged by mechanical impact. Before use, check that the drill bit is not bent – even slight deformation at a 1.5 mm diameter causes runout and inaccurate holes.
