The M20 machine threading die is made of HSS M2 high-speed steel and is designed for cutting external threads in metal workpieces. The tool is used for both machine and hand threading, ensuring accurate reproduction of the metric thread profile.
A steel alloy with 6% tungsten, 5% molybdenum and 2% vanadium. After hardening the material has a hardness of 62-64 HRC, which translates into resistance to abrasion when cutting threads in structural and alloy steels with a tensile strength of up to 900 MPa.
A thread profile with a nominal diameter of 20 mm and a pitch of 2.5 mm (coarse thread) or 1.5 mm (fine thread). The M20 die is used for medium- and heavy-duty components such as bolts securing steel structures or parts of hydraulic systems.
The relief angle and the shape of the chip flutes are matched to thread cutting in carbon and low-alloy steels. The machine die requires the use of a coolant or cutting oil, which increases the life of the cutting edges and improves thread quality.
The HSS M2 die is intended for machining structural steels, low-alloy steels, grey cast iron and materials with similar mechanical properties. It is not recommended for stainless steels or titanium alloys without the appropriate machining procedure.

When cutting a thread with the M20 die, use a cutting speed of 5-10 m/min for structural steels. Machining requires the use of a coolant or cutting oil, which prevents the tool from overheating and improves thread quality. The die must be kept perpendicular to the workpiece surface, checking the alignment of the thread.
Before cutting an M20 thread, a hole of the thread core diameter has to be made (17.5 mm for a coarse thread). An incorrect hole diameter can damage the die or produce a thread with an incomplete profile. The surface of the hole should be cleaned of burrs and contaminants.
After finishing work, clean the die of swarf and coolant residues, then protect it with a thin film of anti-corrosion oil. Storing the tool in a dry place prevents surface corrosion. Regular checking of the cutting edges allows early detection of wear and prevents threads of reduced quality from being produced.
