HSS Premium 11.5mm Metal Drill Bit YT-44234 Yato

A twist drill bit made from HSS 4241 high-speed steel, designed for drilling steel, cast iron and non-ferrous metals. The 135° split point removes the need for centre punching, and the reduced shank ensures secure mounting in drills of 500W and above.

Diameter11.5 mm
Overall length140 mm
MaterialHSS 4241
StandardDIN 338

Features of the HSS Premium drill bit

HSS 4241 high-speed steel

A molybdenum-bearing steel alloy with a hardness of 62-65 HRC after heat treatment. It retains its cutting properties at temperatures up to 600°C, allowing intensive drilling without loss of sharpness. The molybdenum content increases wear resistance compared with standard HSS steels.

135° split point

The 135° cross-ground point with an additional cutting edge prevents the bit from skating off the drilling point. This design allows drilling to start without first marking with a centre punch, speeding up work when drilling many holes. Particularly useful at diameters above 8 mm.

DIN 338 compliance

The standard defines the dimensional tolerances of the bit (diameter, length, point angles), ensuring repeatable hole dimensions to within ±0.05 mm. It guarantees compatibility with drill chucks from all manufacturers and allows sharpening without any loss of geometrical parameters.

Reduced shank

On drill bits over 10 mm in diameter, the shank is turned down to 10 mm over a length of 30-40 mm. This prevents the chuck from burning out during intensive work and allows use in drills with a 13 mm chuck. It increases mounting stability and reduces runout.

Applications of the metal drill bit

  • Drilling structural steel with a tensile strength of up to 900 N/mm²
  • Drilling holes in 304 and 316 grade stainless steel
  • Machining grey and ductile cast iron
  • Drilling high-carbon and tool steel
  • Assembling steel structures and industrial machinery
  • Workshop tasks in metal fabrication
  • Repairing mechanical equipment and vehicles
  • Drilling holes for M12 bolts (12.5 mm diameter with clearance)

Drilling parameters

For structural steel, recommended speed: 450-600 rpm with emulsion cooling. In stainless steel: 300-400 rpm with generous cooling. Feed rate: 0.15-0.25 mm/rev depending on material hardness. In cast iron, you can work without cooling at 500-700 rpm.

Use and maintenance

Before drilling, check that the bit is secure in the chuck – the shank should be inserted to a depth of at least 25 mm. When drilling holes deeper than 3 times the diameter, periodically withdraw the bit to clear the swarf.

Cooling is essential when drilling stainless steel and recommended for structural steel. You can use cooling and lubricating emulsions, machine oils or specialist fluids. Dry drilling is only acceptable in cast iron and for short operations in mild steel.

After use, clean the swarf from the bit and protect it against corrosion. Storing it in a damp environment without protection causes the cutting edges to oxidise. HSS bits can be sharpened repeatedly – maintaining the 135° angle and edge symmetry is key to preserving their properties.

Checking for wear

The bit needs sharpening when: holes have ragged edges, drilling resistance increases, vibration or squealing occurs during work, or the bit temperature rises significantly. The maximum wear on the cutting edge radius is 0.3 mm – further sharpening alters the geometry and reduces effectiveness.
