Kraft&Dele KD11406 Induction Moisture Meter

The KD11406 is a non-invasive moisture meter that works on the principle of electromagnetic induction. It is designed to check moisture content in wood, masonry, fabrics and paper without driving in electrodes or damaging the surface being tested. The sensor on the rear of the tool emits and receives electromagnetic signals, and the reading is an averaged moisture value across the full cross-section up to the maximum detection depth.

Detection depthup to 20 mm
Range (softwood)0–53%
Range (hardwood)0–35%
Material modes4 (masonry, softwood, hardwood, other)

Key features

Induction measurement – no damage to the surface

The electromagnetic method removes the need to drive in measuring pins. The sensor is simply placed against the surface, which allows repeated checks of the same spot without leaving marks – important for finished joinery, flooring and fabrics.

Penetration depth up to 20 mm

The meter detects moisture to a depth of 20 mm below the surface. Values closer to the surface carry more weight in the final result than those at the maximum depth, which should be taken into account when interpreting the reading on layered materials.

Four material modes

Selecting a mode (masonry, softwood, hardwood, fabric/paper) adapts the signal conversion algorithm to the dielectric properties of the material. Using the wrong mode leads to incorrect readings, so choosing the correct material profile is essential for a reliable result.

Automatic calibration and data storage

The meter calibrates automatically before every measurement, which limits the influence of external factors on the result. The data storage function lets you compare readings from different points or different measuring sessions without having to note the results down by hand.

How to interpret the reading

The displayed value is the average moisture content across the whole penetration area (0–20 mm). Moisture near the surface carries more weight in the average than moisture at the maximum depth. If uneven moisture is suspected (for example a wet layer beneath a dry surface), take several readings at different points and compare the results.

Applications

  • Checking wood moisture before carpentry work or floor installation
  • Checking masonry and plaster for moisture after water damage or during building handover
  • Monitoring the moisture content of building materials in storage
  • Assessing how well plaster or screed has dried before laying floor coverings
  • Checking fabric and paper moisture in production or storage processes
  • Detecting moisture in timber roof and ceiling structures
  • Checking the moisture content of firewood before the heating season

Limitations of the induction method

Induction meters are sensitive to metal items (reinforcement, pipes, screws) in the material being tested – their presence can distort the reading. If moisture is suspected behind metal items or at a depth greater than 20 mm, a different measuring method is required. The ±4% accuracy applies to wood mode – for other materials the reading should be treated as indicative.
