Features of left-cutting tin snips

Left-cutting action

The blade geometry cuts with the material deflected to the left. This means the offcut falls away on the left of the cut line as you work, making it easier to follow the cut visually and guide the tool along the marked line. Particularly useful when cutting curves and rounds in an anti-clockwise direction.

Chrome-nickel steel (Cr-Ni)

Blades made from a chrome-nickel alloy offer greater corrosion resistance, which extends tool life when working with a range of sheet metals, including galvanised. The addition of chromium and nickel also improves the hardness of the cutting edges, so they need sharpening less often.

Two-colour handle

The handle construction combines a hard core material with a soft non-slip layer. The two-colour design makes the cutting direction easy to identify in a tool kit. The ergonomic shape reduces hand fatigue during repeated cuts.

Sheet metal work

Left-cutting snips complement a set of straight and right-cutting snips. A complete set lets you make every type of cut without having to turn the material. Particularly useful for cutting openings, fitting flashings and bodywork.

Applications of left-cutting tin snips

  • Cutting round and oval openings in sheet metal
  • Cutting arcs and rounds in an anti-clockwise direction
  • Sheet metal work in vehicle workshops
  • Fitting flashings in construction
  • Punching out shapes from galvanised sheet
  • Work on ventilation and air conditioning systems
  • Trimming sheet metal in metal fabrication shops
  • Vehicle body repairs and restoration

How to identify the cutting direction of tin snips

Left-cutting snips are usually marked in red or yellow on the handle. When cutting, the upper blade moves to the left relative to the lower blade, and the offcut falls away on the left. Right-cutting snips are marked in green, while straight snips have no colour marking or are blue. For professional work it is worth having all three types to hand.

Use and maintenance

Before you start cutting, check that the bolt joining the blades is tightened correctly - too loose and it will crush the material, too tight and it will make the tool hard to work with. While cutting, hold the snips perpendicular to the sheet surface, and the blade opening angle should not exceed 30 degrees if you want a clean cut edge.

Cr-Ni steel blades need periodic cleaning to remove material residue and lubrication of the pivot point with light machine oil. After working with galvanised sheet, remove any zinc residue, which can affect the smoothness of the action. Storing the tool in a dry place extends its service life.

Blunt blades show up as crushing of the material instead of a clean cut. In that case professional sharpening is required, keeping the original cutting edge angle, which is typically 80-85 degrees.
