A die stock designed for cutting metric threads by hand with M10 and M11 dies. A workshop tool used in mechanical engineering, metalworking and assembly work where holes have to be tapped accurately.
The die stock is designed for dies with a diameter of M10 (10 mm) and M11 (11 mm). This range covers the thread diameters most often used in steel structures, vehicle mechanics and the assembly of machine components. Compatibility with two adjacent sizes means fewer tools are needed in the workshop kit.
The tool is fitted with handle arms that allow the torque to be controlled by hand while cutting the thread. Guiding the die stock manually ensures the cutting angle is set accurately and lets the operator feel the resistance of the material, which reduces the risk of damaging the thread or snapping the die.
A clamping or jaw mechanism holds the die securely on the axis of the die stock. Centring the die correctly in the stock is essential for cutting a thread perpendicular to the surface of the material and maintaining dimensional tolerances.
The body of the die stock is made from tool steel or alloy steel resistant to mechanical deformation. The strength of the material matters when cutting threads in harder steels, where greater torsional stress is transmitted through the handle arms.

Before fitting the die, check the diameter marking on the die stem (M10 or M11) and make sure the diameter of the die stem falls within the clamping range of the die stock. Metric M10-M11 dies have standardised square stem dimensions, which ensures universal fitting in die stocks of this type.
When cutting a thread, guide the die stock perpendicular to the surface of the material and turn it clockwise (for right-hand threads). After each full turn, back the die off by about half a turn to break the swarf and make it easier to clear from the flutes of the die. Using threading oil or a coolant emulsion reduces friction and extends the life of the die.
After finishing the work, clean the die stock of metal swarf and lubricant residue. The die clamping mechanism requires periodic greasing to prevent the clamping parts from seizing. Storing the tool in a dry place protects it from surface corrosion.
