HSS Fine Pitch Hand Taps M12 x 1.25 mm – 2 pc | DIN 2181

A set of two hand taps for cutting and repairing M12 x 1.25 mm fine pitch internal threads. The tools are made from high-speed steel (HSS) and comply with DIN 2181, which specifies the geometric requirements and tolerances for taps used on metric fine threads.

Set contents2 taps

Features of the set

High-speed steel (HSS)

HSS (High Speed Steel) is a tool alloy with a high content of tungsten, molybdenum and vanadium. It retains its hardness at the elevated temperatures generated during cutting, which translates into a longer tool life than carbon steel taps.

1.25 mm fine pitch

A 1.25 mm pitch is finer than the standard M12 thread pitch (1.75 mm). A finer pitch means more threads per unit of length, which makes the joint more resistant to vibration and self-loosening and allows more precise adjustment of preload. Fine threads are used where a standard pitch does not meet the technical requirements.

DIN 2181 compliance

DIN 2181 specifies the dimensions, tolerances and geometric requirements for taps used on metric fine threads. Tools made to this standard are interchangeable with other tools of the same class and ensure repeatable thread quality.

Two-piece set

The set comprises a taper tap and a finishing tap, which are used one after the other. Splitting the process into two stages reduces the cutting force required from each tool, lowers the risk of tap breakage and improves the surface quality of the finished thread.

Two-stage tapping process

STAGE 1

Taper tap

A tool with a tapered lead that cuts the thread form in the drilled hole. It guides the tool axially and removes most of the material, preparing the hole for the finishing operation. The roughing pass reduces the load on the finishing tap and the risk of damaging it.

STAGE 2

Finishing tap

A tool with a shorter lead that brings the thread to its final size and profile in accordance with the standard. It works in the hole pre-cut by the taper tap, which makes it possible to produce an accurate thread form with less cutting force.

Applications

  • Cutting new M12 x 1.25 mm internal threads in structural components
  • Repair and reconditioning of damaged fine threads
  • Machining of structural and alloy steels
  • Tapping non-ferrous metals (aluminium, brass, copper)
  • Tapping cast iron
  • Tapping selected plastics
  • Service and repair work in the automotive sector (fine threads are the standard choice for joints exposed to vibration)
  • Manufacture and assembly of hydraulic components and precision machinery

Choosing the tapping drill size for an M12 x 1.25 mm thread

A hole of the correct diameter has to be drilled before tapping. For an M12 x 1.25 mm thread, the recommended tapping drill diameter is approximately 10.8 mm. Using a drill of the correct diameter has a direct effect on thread quality and tool life — a hole that is too small increases cutting resistance and the risk of tap breakage, while a hole that is too large results in an incomplete thread profile.

When to choose a fine thread instead of a standard one?

The M12 x 1.25 mm (fine) thread is used instead of the standard M12 x 1.75 mm where the joint is exposed to vibration and the risk of self-loosening, where precise adjustment of preload is required, or where the component has thin walls and there is no room for a full standard thread profile. Typical areas of use include automotive engineering, hydraulics, precision engineering and machine building.
