A 200 mm hand file with a double cut, designed for working metals, steel, cast iron and hard plastics. The half-round design allows both flat and concave surfaces to be worked.
The half-round profile combines a flat working face with a rounded side. The flat side is used for working flat surfaces and edges, while the rounded side smooths holes, curves and concave surfaces. This design removes the need for two separate tools.
A double cut consists of two sets of teeth set at an angle. The first cut removes larger amounts of material, while the second smooths the surface. Compared with a single cut, this design speeds up the work and gives better control over the material being worked.
A length of 200 mm is a standard in engineering and metalworking workshops. It provides the optimum balance between stroke reach and precision. Files of this length are well suited to work requiring close control of detail and to machining medium-sized components.
The handle has a hard plastic core with a soft non-slip material on the surface. This design provides a secure grip when pressure is applied and reduces the vibration transmitted to the hand while filing. The material is resistant to oils and workshop solvents.

Double-cut files are intended for materials of medium and high hardness. For soft metals (aluminium, copper), single-cut files are recommended, as they do not clog with swarf. For hardened steel and cast iron, files with a finer cut are the better choice.
When filing, apply even pressure in the direction of the forward stroke. The return stroke should be made without pressure, which prevents the teeth from blunting prematurely. The optimum rate is 40-60 strokes per minute.
Once you have finished, clean the file with a wire brush, removing swarf from between the teeth. This prevents the cut from clogging and the tool from losing its effectiveness. Storing it in a dry place, separate from other tools, protects it from corrosion and mechanical damage.
Never use a file as a lever or a hammer. The tool steel from which files are made is hard but brittle and may fracture under impact or excessive bending.
When working metal, wear safety goggles to protect against flying swarf. Work gloves are also recommended to protect against sharp edges on the workpiece. Workpieces should be securely clamped in a vice or suitable holder.
