A metal wedging wedge designed for the permanent securing of tool heads onto wooden handles. Made from cast metal with barbs that prevent loosening.
The wedge has projecting barbs that bite into the handle wood once driven in. The barbs mechanically lock the wedge in place, preventing it from working loose under vibration during use of the tool.
Cast metal resists deformation during driving. The hardness of the material allows the wood fibres to be spread effectively without the wedge itself cracking.
The size designation refers to the thickness of the wedge (5 mm). The width and height of 35 mm match the standard eye diameters in the heads of hand tools weighing 0.8–1.5 kg.
The set of 10 wedges allows several tools to be wedged or repairs to be carried out in the workshop. The bulk format lowers the unit cost for frequent use.

Before driving in the wedge, check that the eye in the tool head is the right size (usually 30–40 mm for size 5). The wooden handle should protrude 2–3 mm above the head. The wedge is driven in along the wood grain, perpendicular to the axis of the tool, using a metal hammer. Once driven in, any excess wood can be sanded down.
After wedging, check the stability of the joint by attempting to rotate the head around the handle. A correctly wedged tool should show no play at all. For tools used intensively, periodic checks of the fit every 3–6 months are recommended.
Unused wedges should be stored in a dry place. Cast metal does not require special protection against corrosion, but moisture can accelerate surface oxidation, which will make them harder to drive in later.
