MIG Welding Wire 0.6 mm 5 kg GEKO G74123

Manganese-silicon filler wire for MIG/MAG welding under shielding gas. Suitable for welding carbon structural steels and high-strength steels.

Wire diameter0.6 mm
Welding processMIG/MAG
StandardsER70S-6 / SG2
Spool weight5 kg

Technical characteristics

0.6 mm diameter – specialist applications

0.6 mm wire is designed for welding thin sheet metal, typically up to 2–3 mm thick. This diameter allows precise control of the welding arc and minimises the risk of burning through the material in sheet metal and bodywork applications.

Manganese-silicon composition with copper

The addition of manganese and silicon improves the mechanical properties of the weld and aids deoxidation of the material. The copper coating protects the wire from corrosion during storage and ensures better electrical contact in the welding torch.

Compatibility with shielding gases

The wire works with both Ar/CO2 mixtures (typically 80/20 or 92/8) and pure CO2. The choice of gas affects the arc characteristics and depth of penetration – CO2 provides deeper penetration, while an argon mixture gives a more stable arc and less spatter.

DC- polarity (negative on the wire)

The recommended direct current electrode negative polarity (DCEN) provides optimum welding conditions – a stable arc, deep penetration and minimal spatter. MIG/MAG welding machines set this polarity automatically when welding with solid wires.

Applications

  • Welding thin car body panels in body shops
  • Repair and manufacture of car exhaust silencers
  • Welding structural steels with a yield strength below 420 MPa
  • Work with boiler plate and non-alloy steels
  • Welding shipbuilding plate and steel
  • Joining carbon-manganese steels
  • Work requiring precise control of heat input
  • Welding structures made from thin steel sections

Material thickness range

0.6 mm wire is suitable for welding thin sheet (0.8–3 mm), medium-thick material (3–6 mm) and thicker materials when multi-pass welding. For plate above 6 mm, larger wire diameters (0.8–1.0 mm) are recommended to increase productivity.

Standards and classification

The wire meets the requirements of two key welding standards:

AWS A5.18-ER70S-6 – the American standard defining chemical composition and mechanical properties. The ER70S-6 designation denotes an electrode wire (ER) with a minimum tensile strength of 70 ksi (480 MPa), solid (S) with the addition of manganese and silicon (6).

DIN 8559 : SG2 – the German/European standard classifying the wire as SG2 (solid wire with deoxidising additions). This designation confirms compatibility with European welding standards and guarantees consistent parameters.

Storage and maintenance

Store the wire in a dry room, protected from moisture. The copper coating protects against corrosion, but after prolonged storage in damp conditions it may require cleaning before use. Avoid mechanical damage to the spool, which can cause jamming during wire feeding.
