Regular replacement of the outer cover lens is part of proper welding helmet maintenance. The lens should be replaced when deep scratches that restrict visibility appear on its surface, along with heat discolouration from contact with hot spatter, mechanical cracks, or surface clouding that makes it difficult to assess weld quality.

The outer cover lens should be cleaned regularly of welding residue using a soft cloth. Organic solvents, which can damage the polycarbonate, should be avoided.
