Use and maintenance
Preparation before use
Before first use, check the condition of the blade — it should be free from dirt and rust. The blade should be slightly flexible, which allows the filler to be spread evenly. A blade that is too stiff leaves streaks, while one that is too soft does not allow controlled application of the material.
Working technique
Apply the filler in an upward or left-to-right motion, holding the putty knife at an angle of about 30-45 degrees to the surface. Each successive coat should overlap the previous one by about 2-3 cm. Once the first coat has dried, sand the surface before applying the next.
Cleaning after use
Immediately after finishing work, remove any remaining filler from the blade using water or a suitable solvent, depending on the type of material used. Dried filler has to be removed mechanically, which can damage the blade. Store the tool in a dry place.
Blade maintenance
Once cleaned, the blade can be protected with a thin layer of oil, especially during longer periods without use. This prevents corrosion. If the working edge is damaged — dented or bent — the blade can be carefully levelled with a file, keeping the surface flat.
