The cylinder honing process
Honing is a finishing process that produces the characteristic cross-hatch pattern on the cylinder surface, with the lines intersecting at an angle of 45-60 degrees. This microstructure acts as a retention network for engine oil, ensuring proper lubrication of the piston rings. Stones measuring 51mm x 7mm allow cylinders with diameters close to 2 inches to be machined, which corresponds to most car engines with a displacement of 1.0-2.0 litres per cylinder.
Replacing and maintaining the stones
The abrasive stones in a cylinder hone are subject to service wear and need to be replaced periodically. Signs that replacement is due include: longer honing times, difficulty in achieving the correct surface structure, uneven machining marks on the cylinder, and visible mechanical damage to the stones. The stones in the YT-05811 hone are replaced by loosening the retaining screws and fitting a new set.
