Round Chainsaw File 4.0 mm YATO YT-85025 – Set of 3

A set of three round files with a diameter of 4.0 mm, designed for sharpening saw chains with a 3/8" pitch. Made from bearing steel, they restore the cutting edge geometry precisely and deliver long service life without losing their cutting performance.

Technical characteristics of the chainsaw file

4.0 mm Diameter – Matches 3/8" Saw Chains

The file diameter must match the depth of the chain tooth gullet. The 4.0 mm value is standard for chains with a 3/8" pitch, used on saws with a power output of up to around 2.5 kW. Using the wrong diameter results in an incorrect sharpening angle and reduced cutting performance.

Bearing Steel – A Material of Increased Hardness

Bearing steel is characterised by a high carbon and chromium content, which delivers hardness in the range of 60-64 HRC after hardening. This material retains the sharpness of the cutting teeth when working on hardened chrome-nickel steel chains, extending the service life of the file.

250 mm Length – Ergonomics and Sharpening Control

The 250 mm working length allows the file to be drawn across the full tooth profile in a single stroke, ensuring even material removal. This improves the repeatability of the sharpening process and shortens the time needed to service the entire chain.

Set of 3 – Tool Rotation

Three files allow for rotational use – when one loses its sharpness, work can continue with the next, while the worn ones are scheduled for reconditioning or replacement. A practical solution for the regular maintenance of several saws or intensive seasonal work.

Applications of chainsaw files

  • Sharpening petrol chainsaw chains with a power output of up to 2.5 kW
  • Maintenance of electric chainsaw chains with a 3/8" pitch
  • Restoring cutting edge geometry after working in timber contaminated with sand
  • Regular chain sharpening in forestry and garden work
  • Repairing damaged chain teeth after contact with stones or nails
  • Preparing chains for working in hardwood (oak, beech, hornbeam)
  • Chain maintenance in service workshops

How do I check that a file is compatible with a chain?

The chain pitch (the distance between three consecutive rivets divided by two) is given in inches on the saw's guide bar or in its documentation. For 3/8" (9.32 mm) chains, 4.0 mm files are used. Other common sizes: 5/32" (4.0 mm), 3/16" (4.8 mm), 7/32" (5.5 mm). Using the wrong file changes the sharpening angle from the nominal 30° or 35°, which reduces cutting efficiency.

Using and maintaining round files

The file should be drawn in a push stroke, pressed against the inside edge of the tooth at a right angle to the guide bar. 3-5 even strokes per tooth are recommended, maintaining a constant angle of 30° or 35° to the axis of the chain (the value depends on the chain type). After each sharpening session, clean the tooth gullets of filing swarf with a wire brush.

Files lose their sharpness after sharpening around 5-10 chains, depending on the hardness of the chain steel and the degree of wear. A worn file is recognisable by the way it slides over the surface of the tooth without removing material, and by the increased effort needed to guide the tool. Do not apply excessive pressure – sharpening effectiveness depends on the sharpness of the cutting teeth, not on the force applied.

Storing files in a dry place, protected from moisture, prevents surface corrosion and premature blunting. After working in the field, it is advisable to wipe the files with a dry cloth and, optionally, to coat them with machine oil.

Personal protective equipment for chain sharpening

When sharpening a chain, wear protective gloves to protect against cuts from the sharp teeth, and safety glasses to protect against metal fragments. The chain should be clamped in the guide bar and secured against rotation. Do not sharpen a chain fitted to a saw with access to the ignition.
