A specialist workshop tool designed for fitting and removing spark plugs. The 1/2" drive socket can be used with torque wrenches and ratchets, allowing plugs to be tightened in a controlled way in line with engine manufacturers' recommendations.
The 21 mm internal diameter matches the hex fitting of the spark plugs used in most petrol cars and light commercial vehicles. Before buying, check the required plug size for the specific spark plug model in the vehicle's technical documentation.
The standard 1/2" (12.7 mm) square drive is compatible with professional workshop tooling: ratchets, torque wrenches, extension bars and universal joints. It allows spark plugs to be tightened precisely to the recommended torque figures.
Typical spark plug sockets are fitted with a magnet or rubber insert that stops the plug from dropping out when it is withdrawn from the engine bay. This makes the job easier in deep plug wells where access by hand is limited.
Spark plug sockets are longer than standard workshop sockets, which follows from the way engine bays are built. This allows plugs seated deep in the cylinder head, often hidden behind intake or ignition components, to be reached.

The required spark plug spanner size is given in the vehicle's technical documentation or on the packaging of the new plugs. The most common sizes are 16 mm (popular in older designs), 21 mm (standard on most modern engines) and 14 mm. Before buying a socket it is worth checking the size on the plugs currently fitted.
When working with a spark plug socket, take care not to damage the threads in the cylinder head. A torque wrench should be used to tighten the plugs to the torque recommended by the manufacturer (typically 20-30 Nm for plugs with a flat gasket, 10-15 Nm for tapered-seat plugs).
Before fitting a new plug, it is worth applying a small amount of graphite or ceramic grease to the thread, which makes removal easier later and prevents seizing. Fit the socket onto the plug carefully so that the ceramic insulator is not damaged.
After use, clean the socket of dirt and protect it against corrosion. Check the internal working surface periodically for wear – damaged edges can round off the hex on the spark plug and make it impossible to tighten.
