Spark Plug Socket 18 mm YT-0818 YATO

A specialist workshop tool designed for fitting and removing spark plugs. The 18 mm hex socket, made from chrome vanadium steel, ensures precise operation when changing spark plugs in petrol engines.

Features of the spark plug socket

18 mm hex socket

The 18 mm size is standard on most cars and motorcycles. The six-point profile ensures even distribution of force across all edges of the plug, eliminating the risk of rounding and damage to the ceramic insulator.

Chrome vanadium (CrV) steel

The steel alloy with added chromium and vanadium offers increased hardness and wear resistance. The material retains its properties even under intensive workshop use, does not deform under load and does not crack with changes in temperature.

Matt chrome plating

The chrome coating protects the steel against corrosion when working in the damp environment of the engine bay. The matt finish prevents the hand from slipping and makes it easier to control the tightening torque, which is crucial when fitting spark plugs.

Socket design

The socket works with ratchets and speed braces, enabling work in the confined space of the engine bay. The standard square drive allows the use of extensions and universal joints in hard-to-reach places.

Applications of the spark plug socket

  • Changing spark plugs in cars with petrol engines
  • Spark plug servicing on motorcycles and scooters
  • Maintenance work on generators and petrol lawnmowers
  • Removing spark plugs during combustion chamber diagnostics
  • Fitting spark plugs with the correct tightening torque
  • Workshop tasks at vehicle service centres
  • Vehicle maintenance in private garages
  • Servicing petrol engines in garden equipment

Checking compatibility

Before purchase, verify the spark plug socket size in the vehicle's technical documentation. Most modern cars use spark plugs with a 16 mm or 18 mm hex. An 18 mm socket is standard on popular Japanese and European models. If in doubt, measure the hex across the flats of the old plug with a calliper.

Use and maintenance

When using the spark plug socket, avoid applying excessive force when removing plugs, especially if they have not been changed for a long time. Seized threads require the prior application of a penetrating fluid. After each use, clean combustion deposits from the socket and protect the surface with a thin film of oil.

The socket should be stored in a dry place, together with the other sockets. Regularly checking the condition of the socket makes it possible to detect any damage to the hex profile that could lead to damage to the spark plug during removal.

Spark plug tightening torque

Engine manufacturers specify a recommended spark plug tightening torque in the range of 15-30 Nm, depending on the thread type and cylinder head design. Too little torque can lead to a leak in the combustion chamber, while excessive force risks damaging the threads in an aluminium cylinder head. When fitting with a socket, use a torque wrench or tighten by hand, monitoring the resistance.
