Splitting Axe with Wedge Head 1 kg Hickory Handle YT-8011 YATO

A splitting axe with a wedge-shaped head, designed for splitting firewood and logs for fuel. The YT-8011 features a 43 cm hickory handle and a carbon steel head with a dual fixing system.

Features of the YT-8011 splitting axe

Wedge-shaped carbon steel head

Carbon steel has a hardness exceeding 50 HRC, which keeps the cutting edge sharp for longer. The wedge-shaped head flares outwards and splits wood effectively by forcing the fibres apart rather than cutting them. The ground surface of the wedge reduces friction as it is driven into the wood.

Hickory handle

Hickory (Carya) is one of the hardest woods used for hand tools. It has a natural springiness that absorbs the shock of impact, protecting the user's wrists and elbows. The fibrous structure of hickory makes it more resistant to splitting than ash or birch.

Dual head fixing system

The head is secured to the handle with a wooden wedge driven in lengthways and a steel cross wedge. This arrangement eliminates play and prevents the head from working loose during intensive use. The wooden wedge expands the handle fibres inside the eye of the head, while the steel wedge locks movement in the second plane.

43 cm handle

A 43 cm handle offers the optimum balance between striking force and control of the tool. This universal length allows you to work standing upright with the log on the ground or on a chopping block. A shorter handle makes precise strikes easier and simplifies carrying the tool.

Difference between a splitting axe and a general-purpose axe

Splitting axe (wedge-shaped)

The head is wedge-shaped with an angle of 30-35°, thicker and heavier. It is intended solely for splitting wood along the grain. It is not suitable for felling trees or cross-cutting. It requires the log to be stood upright on a firm surface and struck from above.

General-purpose axe

The head has an angle of 20-25°, thinner and sharper. It is used for felling, pruning branches and splitting smaller pieces of wood. Less effective when splitting thick logs, but more versatile in use.

Use and maintenance

Before first use, check that the head is securely fixed. If there is any play, the wooden wedge can be driven in further or replaced with a new one. After use, clean the axe of resin residue and moisture, and protect the cutting edge with mineral oil to prevent corrosion.

A hickory handle can dry out over time, so it is advisable to treat it periodically with linseed oil or specialist preparations for tool-handle wood. When splitting, avoid striking stones, nails or hard knots, which can chip the cutting edge. Storing the axe in a dry place extends the service life of both the head and the handle.
