File cut grades - the differences
How to choose the right cut grade?
Cut #1 (single): A coarse cut for quickly removing large amounts of material; it leaves a rough surface.
Cut #2 (double): A medium all-purpose cut that balances efficiency and finish quality.
Cut #3 (triple): A finer cut for more precise work and a better surface finish.
Cut #4 and above: Very fine cuts for finishing work and for working soft materials.
Use and maintenance
When using a file, work with a single-direction stroke - apply pressure on the forward stroke and ease off the tool on the return stroke. This prevents the teeth from dulling prematurely. The file should be cleaned regularly with a wire brush to remove metal filings, which can clog the spaces between the teeth and reduce cutting efficiency.
Files should be stored in a way that prevents them from rubbing against one another - contact between the working surfaces damages the teeth. After finishing work, it is advisable to remove any material residue and protect the file from moisture.
Work safety
When working metal, wear safety goggles to protect against flying metal filings. Work gloves are also recommended to protect against the sharp edges of the workpiece. Make sure the workpiece is securely clamped in a vice or other holder.
