YATO YT-6186 Square Second-Cut Metal File 200 mm

A square file with a 200 mm working length and a second-cut pattern, designed for hand-working metals, plastics and hard woods. The tool is fitted with a three-component handle that provides a firm grip during precision filing work.

Technical characteristics of the square file

Square profile

The square cross-section allows work on rectangular holes, slots, internal corners and flat surfaces. Its four working faces make it possible to work in hard-to-reach places where flat files have limited use.

Second cut

A medium tooth density (around 20–30 teeth per centimetre) provides a balance between the speed of material removal and the quality of the surface finish. Second-cut files are used for finishing operations after initial work with a coarse file.

200 mm working length

The 200 mm size is the standard for workshop and assembly work, giving a good contact area with the material while keeping the tool under control. This length works well both for precision work and for removing larger amounts of material.

Three-component handle

A construction made from three materials with different properties: a hard core for rigidity, a middle layer that absorbs vibration, and an outer non-slip coating. This reduces hand fatigue during prolonged work.

Applications of the square second-cut file

  • Finishing square and rectangular holes after drilling or initial working
  • Truing up slots, gaps and internal corners in metal structures
  • Removing burrs and sharp edges after cutting, drilling or welding
  • Fitting fasteners, sections and steel profiles
  • Working parts made of aluminium, brass, copper and carbon steel
  • Model-making work requiring the precision shaping of small components
  • Repair and maintenance of tools and machinery in a mechanical workshop
  • Working plastics and composites during assembly work

File cut types – comparison

How to choose the right cut

Bastard cut: 10–15 teeth/cm – fast removal of large amounts of material, leaves a rough surface, used for roughing.

Second cut: 20–30 teeth/cm – all-round use, a balance between output and finish quality, suitable for most workshop tasks.

Smooth cut: 35–50 teeth/cm – precision finishing, a smooth surface after working, used for final and precision work.

Using and maintaining the file

A file only cuts effectively on the forward stroke – the teeth remove material in this direction. On the return stroke, lift the tool slightly to avoid blunting the cut. The optimum speed is around 40–60 strokes per minute, using the full working length.

Clogging of the grooves between the teeth with metal swarf (known as pinning) significantly reduces performance. Clean the file with a steel wire brush, brushing along the cut. Before working on soft aluminium, it is worth rubbing chalk over the file surface – this prevents swarf from sticking.

Storage requires protecting the working part from moisture and contact with other tools. Loose files lying in a drawer blunt each other's cut. It is advisable to hang them on holders or store them in compartments with separators. After use, remove the swarf and protect the surface with a thin film of machine oil.
