A set of specialist sockets designed for removing and refitting engine oil sump plugs in vehicles. The 18-piece set of sockets in a range of sizes and profiles provides compatibility with the majority of sump plug systems in use.
Material subjected to a hardening process offers increased surface hardness and wear resistance. It prevents deformation when working on seized plugs, where higher torques are required. Hardening minimises the risk of damage to the working edges.
The set covers the most common plug types used by vehicle manufacturers: multi-point, square, hex and special profiles. It removes the need for universal sockets, which can damage the plug through an imprecise fit. Each socket is matched to a specific standard.
Manufacturing tolerances ensure the socket sits fully against the plug's working surface. Forces are distributed across the entire contact surface, which prevents the plug edges from rounding off during removal. This is particularly important with aluminium plugs, which deform easily.
The sockets sit in dedicated slots marked with their size. This makes it quick to identify the piece you need and prevents individual sockets from getting lost. The compact format allows storage in a workshop drawer or tool box.

Before starting work, identify the type of drain plug. The socket should fit without play - play means the wrong size and a risk of damaging the plug. If in doubt, check the vehicle's technical documentation or compare with the plug profile.
After finishing work, clean the sockets of residual oil using a solvent or white spirit. Moisture and oil residue can cause the steel to corrode. Periodically applying a thin coat of protective oil extends the life of the tools. Storing them in a closed case protects against mechanical damage.
Oil drain plugs must be tightened to the correct torque, typically in the range of 20-30 Nm for passenger cars. Too much torque can damage the thread in the sump, too little causes leaks. A torque wrench is recommended for tightening the plug after an oil change.
