TUV/GS Voltage Tester 190 mm VOREL 65235

An AC voltage tester with TUV/GS certification for checking for the presence of voltage in electrical installations. A tool designed for checking voltage in the 110-250 V AC range with a visual neon indication.

Voltage range110-250 V AC
Length190 mm
CertificationTUV/GS
Model65235

Voltage tester features

Measuring range 110-250 V AC

The tester detects AC voltage across the standard range found in domestic and industrial installations. The 110-250 V range covers the typical mains voltages used in Europe (230 V) and North America (110-120 V), making it possible to check most low-voltage electrical installations.

TUV/GS safety certification

The TUV/GS mark (Geprüfte Sicherheit) confirms compliance with European safety standards for electrical tools. Issued by the independent TÜV testing body, the certificate confirms that the tester has passed insulation, mechanical strength and user safety tests.

Neon voltage indication

The built-in neon lamp lights up in the presence of AC voltage, giving a clear visual indication. The neon lamp needs no battery power and works directly from the voltage being detected, which removes the risk of false readings caused by a flat battery.

Insulated 190 mm design

The 190 mm length provides a safe distance from the point of measurement. The insulated handle protects the user from electric shock when touching live parts. The compact dimensions allow work in hard-to-reach places such as back boxes and distribution enclosures.

Applications of the voltage tester

  • Checking for the presence of voltage at socket outlets before carrying out installation work
  • Verifying that the supply is isolated after switching off the protective devices in the distribution board
  • Checking live conductors in back boxes during installation
  • Diagnosing faults in the electrical circuits of domestic appliances
  • Testing the operation of circuit breakers and switches
  • Checking for voltage at light fittings before replacing lamps
  • Safety-checking an installation before it is handed over for use
  • Locating live conductors in walls during refurbishment work

How a neon voltage tester works

A voltage tester with a neon lamp works by passing a small current through the user's body to earth. When the probe tip touches a live conductor and the user touches the metal cap at the rear of the tester, a circuit is completed at a very low current (below the threshold of perception), which causes the neon lamp to light. For this reason the tester will not work when the user is insulated from earth (for example, standing on a wooden ladder or wearing insulated footwear).

Use and safety

Before each use, check the tester's condition, paying attention to any damage to the handle insulation and to the condition of the probe tip. The tester should be checked on a source of known status (for example, a socket outlet known to be working) to confirm that it is functioning.

During testing, touch the metal cap at the rear of the tester to complete the circuit. The neon lamp lighting up indicates the presence of voltage. No light may mean either that there is no voltage or that the tester is faulty or not earthed, so the result should always be confirmed with a proving test.

Neon testers need no batteries or calibration, but they do have limitations. They do not detect DC voltage and they do not indicate the voltage value, only its presence. They are not suitable for precise measurements or for detecting voltages below 110 V. For such applications, multimeters or specialist testers should be used.

Differences between a neon tester and an electronic tester

Neon testers are simpler and cheaper, need no power supply, but have limited sensitivity and require contact with earth. Electronic (non-contact) testers detect the electromagnetic field around conductors, work without galvanic contact, are battery-powered and often give an audible indication of voltage. Neon testers are well suited to basic installation work, whereas electronic testers offer greater safety and convenience where they are used frequently.
