A set of four carbon steel gimlets designed for pre-drilling holes in wood, plastics and leather. The tools allow precise preparation of the material before driving in fasteners.
The steel wire provides sufficient rigidity and resistance to bending during drilling. Carbon steel offers durability under regular use in soft and medium-hard materials.
Diameters of 2, 3, 4 and 5 mm cover typical requirements in assembly work and model making. Matching the right gimlet diameter to the screw thickness prevents the material from splitting and makes driving the screw easier.
The gimlets prepare a pilot hole before driving in screws. Pilot drilling reduces the risk of the wood splitting, particularly at the edges of components and in plastics.
The tools are suitable for softwood and hardwood, PVC, leather and other materials of similar hardness. The 100-140 mm length allows work in standard assembly conditions.

The gimlet diameter should match the diameter of the screw shank (excluding the thread). For hardwood, use a gimlet with a diameter close to the shank diameter; for softwood, a slightly smaller diameter can be used. When fitting close to the edge of the material, pilot drilling is always recommended.
Gimlets require manual rotation with simultaneous pressure along the axis of the hole. The tool should be turned slowly, keeping it perpendicular to the surface of the material. When drilling deep holes, it is worth withdrawing the gimlet periodically to clear the swarf.
After use, clean the tools of any material residue and, if necessary, protect them against corrosion. Carbon steel should be stored in dry conditions. Regularly checking the sharpness of the tips helps maintain drilling efficiency.
