How to check compatibility with your bike
The 21 cm length allows the lock to go around the bike frame and a fixed object (a post, a rack). Before buying, it is worth measuring the frame circumference at the locking point together with the thickness of the object the bike will be secured to. As a rule, a 21 cm U-lock works well with most urban and trekking bikes.
Use and maintenance
A U-lock needs to be fitted correctly to provide maximum security. The shackle should go around the bike frame and a fixed piece of urban infrastructure, minimising slack. The smaller the space inside the loop, the harder it is to use levering tools.
The cylinder lock mechanism should be serviced periodically using graphite grease or a lock lubricant. Avoid oils, which attract dirt. In winter conditions, it is advisable to de-ice the lock with a dedicated product; do not use hot water.
The plastic coating protects against scratches, but avoid dragging the lock over sharp edges. Damage to the coating can lead to corrosion of the aluminium shackle, especially in high humidity or on contact with road salt.
