How to check the door weight before buying a door closer
The weight of the door leaf can be calculated from its dimensions and material: a solid wooden door measuring 90×200 cm and 4 cm thick weighs around 50-60 kg, a chipboard door around 30-40 kg and a steel door 60-80 kg. Alternatively, the leaf can be removed and weighed on bathroom scales.
Installation and adjustment
The door closer is fitted to the top edge of the door or to the frame in accordance with the manufacturer's installation diagram. The 165×19 mm hole spacing should be marked out using a template or by holding the door closer directly against the surface. Once the body and arm are fitted, adjust the closing force and speed using the adjusting screws.
Closing speed is adjusted with the adjusters on the body of the door closer. Most models have two adjustment ranges: the main closing speed (from 180° to around 15°) and the final closing speed (the last 15° before latching). Correct adjustment ensures smooth closing without slamming.
Door closer maintenance
The hydraulic mechanism requires periodic checks of its seals and oil level. The condition of the arm and its connections should be checked every 6 months where use is intensive. Fixing screws should be tightened if they work loose. Do not apply external greases or oils – the mechanism is filled with hydraulic oil at the factory.
