A non-contact infrared thermometer for measuring temperature at a distance across a range of -50°C to +650°C. Designed for industrial, workshop and diagnostic applications that require fast, accurate surface temperature readings without physical contact.
The ability to measure temperatures from -50°C to +650°C allows diagnostics of both cooling systems and heating surfaces, motors or industrial installations. The range covers the typical temperatures found in automotive, HVAC and manufacturing processes.
The D:S ratio defines the distance from which a given surface can be measured. A value of 12:1 means that from a distance of 120 cm the thermometer measures a spot 10 cm in diameter. The greater the distance, the larger the area covered by the measurement.
Emissivity is a material's ability to emit infrared radiation. Different surfaces have different emissivity: matt and dark surfaces around 0.95, shiny metals 0.1-0.3. Adjustable emissivity ensures accurate measurements on a variety of materials.
The fast response time makes it possible to monitor dynamic temperature changes. This is useful when diagnosing moving parts or components whose temperature changes rapidly, such as braking systems or engines in operation.

For accurate measurements, set the emissivity to suit the material being measured. Matt and dark surfaces require a value of 0.9-0.95, shiny metals 0.1-0.3. The laser is for aiming only and does not affect the measurement. The actual measurement area is determined by the D:S ratio – from a distance of 60 cm the thermometer measures a spot approximately 5 cm in diameter.
The VOREL 81762 laser infrared thermometer is simple to operate. Before first use, fit a 9V type 6F22 battery. The device switches off automatically after 30 seconds of inactivity, which extends battery life to around 50 hours of operation.
During measurement, point the thermometer perpendicular to the surface being measured and press the trigger. The red laser dot indicates the centre of the measurement area. The actual size of the measured area depends on the distance in accordance with the 12:1 ratio.
Protect the optical lens from dirt and scratches. If necessary, it can be cleaned gently with a soft, dry cloth. The device is not waterproof, so avoid contact with moisture. Storing it in a dry place at room temperature ensures long-lasting performance.
