Features of the Whitworth thread pitch gauge

Whitworth 55° system

The 55° thread angle is characteristic of imperial threads to the British Standard Whitworth (BSW) specification. The gauge allows precise verification of both external and internal threads in this standard, which is widely found on older machinery and equipment of British origin.

4-62 BSW range

The 28 blades cover thread counts from 4 to 62 threads per inch, spanning everything from the coarsest assembly threads to fine precision threads. Each blade is marked with its BSW value, allowing quick identification of an unknown thread by matching the profile.

Comb design

The measuring blades are held in a metal frame with a locking mechanism. A clamping screw secures the selected blade in the working position, preventing accidental movement during measurement. The compact form makes the tool easy to store and transport.

Hardened tool steel

How to use a thread pitch gauge

Select blades with a thread pitch close to that of the component you are checking and offer them up in turn. The correct blade sits flush against the thread profile with no visible gaps between the teeth. Once you have found the right blade, read the BSW value engraved on it. For internal threads, the gauge should be applied from inside the hole.

Differences between imperial thread systems

Whitworth (BSW) with its 55° angle differs from the American UNC/UNF system, which has a 60° angle. Using the wrong gauge leads to incorrect identification. A Whitworth gauge is not suitable for measuring metric threads or imperial threads to the UNC/UNF standard. Before measuring, make sure the component comes from a machine that uses the British system.
