Technical features of the wood auger bits

Carbon steel as the working material

Auger bits made from carbon steel are characterised by increased hardness and wear resistance when drilling wood-based materials. This material allows the cutting edges to be sharpened repeatedly without any loss of cutting performance.

Threaded lead screw

The thread on the tip of the bit stabilises the tool at the start of drilling, eliminating bit wander across the surface of the material. This ensures accurate hole positioning without the need for pre-drilling.

Ground cutting edges

Professional grinding of the working edges increases cutting efficiency and reduces the pressure required to produce the hole. This means less load on the drill and cleaner hole edges without splintering the wood.

Hex shank

The hex shank prevents the bit from turning in the drill chuck when working under load. Compatible with standard drill chucks up to 13 mm, as fitted to most cordless and corded drills.

Applications of wood auger bits

  • Drilling fixing holes in beams and structural components made of solid wood
  • Making runs for electrical and plumbing services in timber components
  • Preparing holes for dowels and screws in chipboard, MDF and HDF
  • Drilling construction and furniture plywood of various thicknesses
  • Joinery work in furniture making and timber construction
  • Fitting furniture hardware and hinges that require holes of a specific diameter
  • Renovation and repair of timber components in construction and furniture making
  • Finishing work when installing panelling, battens and decorative elements

Choosing the right auger bit diameter

How to choose the correct auger bit diameter

The bit diameter should match the outside diameter of the dowel or screw. For wood screws, choose a diameter 1-2 mm smaller than the shank diameter of the screw so that the thread grips properly. For wooden dowels, the hole diameter should be identical to the dowel diameter for press-fit joints, or 0.5 mm larger for glued joints.

Use and maintenance

Before drilling, make sure that the bits are correctly secured in the drill chuck. A loose fit can lead to off-centre drilling or damage to the tool. Moderate speeds are recommended during work – too high a rotational speed causes the cutting edges to overheat and burn.

After use, clean the bits of any remaining sawdust and wood dust. Periodic lubrication of the spiral with machine oil prevents corrosion and makes it easier to clear chips while drilling. If the cutting edges become blunt, they can be re-sharpened with a diamond file or a drill bit sharpener.

Safety while working

Wear safety goggles when drilling wood to protect against flying chips and splinters. Work gloves are also recommended when changing bits. The workpiece should be securely clamped to prevent it from moving while drilling. When drilling right through the material, place a sacrificial board on the exit side of the bit to prevent the material from breaking out.
