A polypropylene wood splitting wedge designed for forestry work and preparing firewood. The toothed ridges prevent slipping, and the bright colour makes the tool easy to spot outdoors.
Polypropylene is a thermoplastic that resists impact and abrasion. Unlike steel wedges, it will not damage the axe blade when driven in. The material retains its properties at temperatures from -20°C to +80°C, so it can be used at any time of year.
The side serrations increase friction between the wedge and the wood. This stops the tool from jumping out when splitting hard species or knotty timber. It makes the work safer and removes the need to drive the wedge in repeatedly.
At 315 grams with a length of 245 mm, the wedge adds barely any weight to your kit when working outdoors. It fits easily into a toolbox or work pocket. For comparison, steel wedges of similar dimensions weigh 800-1200 g.
The vivid colour of the plastic contrasts with natural surroundings - grass, forest litter, soil. This makes the wedge easier to find once work is finished or if it is dropped by accident. It is particularly useful when working in dense undergrowth.

Drive the wedge into natural cracks in the wood or into a cut made beforehand with a saw. Strike it with a mallet, the poll of an axe or a club. Avoid striking the wedge directly with the axe blade - this can damage the edge. Once the first wedge is in, place further wedges along the line of the split to control the direction of the split.
After use, clean the wedge of dirt and resin. Polypropylene does not need oiling or any other maintenance. Store in a dry place, away from heat sources above 80°C. Check the condition of the ridges before use - damaged serrations reduce the tool's effectiveness.
