A tool designed for fitting and removing internal circlips in mechanisms, drive systems and machinery. Internal circlip pliers expand the ring so that it can be seated safely in the groove of a shaft or axle.
This size provides adequate leverage when expanding circlips while still allowing work in confined workshop spaces. This length is well suited to circlips from around 12 mm to several tens of millimetres in diameter.
The plier tips are designed to fit into the holes in a circlip. Their shape minimises the risk of slipping out of the holes while the ring is expanded, which improves safety and protects the circlip from deformation.
The design of the tool allows the plier jaws to be opened in a controlled way. When the handles are squeezed, the tips move apart, expanding the circlip until it can be fitted onto a shaft or removed from a groove.
The pliers are made from deformation-resistant tool steel. The hardness of the material prevents wear on the working tips, which matters when they come into frequent contact with hard steel circlips.

Internal circlip pliers (such as model YT-0607) are used for internal circlips – when the handles are squeezed, the tips move apart, expanding the ring. External circlip pliers work the other way round – their tips move together, which compresses an external circlip. Before buying, check whether the circlips in the assembly are fitted inside a groove (in a bore) or on the outside of a shaft.
Before starting work, check the condition of the working tips – damaged or worn tips may slip out of the circlip holes while the ring is being expanded. When fitting a circlip, it is worth covering the working area with a clean cloth, which will catch the ring if it slips off the tool.
After use, clean the pliers of dirt and grease. Storing them in a dry place prevents corrosion of the mechanism and keeps the tool in good working order. Do not use the pliers as a lever or for tasks they were not designed for – this may permanently distort the jaws or damage the tips.
While a circlip is being expanded, the tool remains under spring tension. If the tips suddenly slip out, the circlip may fly off. Safety glasses are recommended, and the working area should be protected. Do not exceed the maximum opening range of the pliers – this may damage the mechanism or break the circlip.
