Before starting to retract the piston, open the brake fluid reservoir cap, as retracting the piston forces fluid back into the reservoir. In vehicles with an EPB system, the caliper may need to be switched to service mode using a diagnostic tester. Checking the condition of the dust seals and lubricating the guide pins reduces the risk of damage during retraction.
The tool should be matched to the shape of the caliper piston, then pressed and turned at the same time in the direction of the thread. The work requires even pressure and a smooth rotating motion. Excessive force or retracting without turning can damage the caliper's internal mechanism. Once the piston is fully retracted, check that the mechanism moves freely before fitting new pads.
When working on the brake system, wear protective gloves due to contact with brake fluid, which is corrosive to the skin and paintwork. Safety glasses protect against fluid splashes when opening the system. Working under a vehicle requires the use of stable supports and keeping a safe distance from components that could fall.
