A set of five long twist drills made from HSS 4341 high-speed steel, intended for drilling into metals. Diameters from 3 to 8 mm, overall length from 150 to 240 mm. The 118° split point tip provides accurate centring without pre-punching. Compliant with DIN 1869.
An alloy containing tungsten, molybdenum and cobalt. A hardness of 63-65 HRC provides resistance to abrasion when drilling structural steel, stainless steel and cast iron. It retains cutting edge sharpness at temperatures of up to 600°C.
Cross grinding removes the central section of the chisel edge, so the drill centres itself without any need for pre-punching. The 118° angle is the standard for most metals and offers a balance between durability and cutting efficiency.
Manufactured to DIN 1869, these drill bits have a greater overall length than standard DIN 338 drill bits. This makes it possible to drill deep holes and to work in hard-to-reach places, for example through tubular profiles or thick walls.
A German standard defining dimensional tolerances, geometry and quality parameters for long twist drills. It guarantees dimensional repeatability and compatibility with drill chucks.

Non-alloy and low-alloy structural steel (up to 900 N/mm²), stainless steel, tool steel, grey and spheroidal graphite cast iron. When drilling harder steels, the use of cutting fluid emulsions is recommended.
Aluminium and aluminium alloys, copper, brass, bronze, zinc. With aluminium, take care with the rotational speed to avoid clogging the flutes.
For structural steel: cutting speed 20-30 m/min, feed 0.1-0.2 mm/rev. For aluminium: speed 80-120 m/min, feed 0.15-0.3 mm/rev. The rotational speed should be calculated using the formula n = (1000 × v) / (π × d), where v is the cutting speed and d is the drill bit diameter.
Before drilling begins, mark the centre of the hole with a centre punch or a centre drill. The split point tip reduces, but does not entirely remove, the need for pre-punching when drilling hard steels. The drill bit should be clamped in the chuck to a depth of at least 2/3 of the shank length to prevent it being pulled out during work.
When drilling deep holes, the drill bit must be withdrawn regularly in order to clear swarf from the flutes. A build-up of swarf causes overheating and loss of cutting edge sharpness. When drilling through, reduce the feed just before breakthrough to avoid tearing out the material.
HSS drill bits require cooling when machining steel. Synthetic emulsions, cutting oils or, in a domestic setting, ordinary soapy water can be used. Aluminium and brass can be drilled dry, although cooling extends tool life.
Once work is finished, clean the drill bits of swarf and dirt, dry them and protect them against corrosion with a thin film of oil. Storing them in the original packaging or a case protects the cutting edges against mechanical damage.
HSS drill bits can be sharpened repeatedly on a grinder while maintaining a 118° point angle and edge symmetry. Incorrect sharpening causes runout, overheating and uneven holes. In professional settings, the use of a drill sharpening machine with angle control is recommended.
