Fitting and use
Fitting the head to the handle correctly
Before fitting the head, check that the diameter of the end of the handle matches the hole in the head. The handle is inserted from the narrower end of the axe eye. Once fitted, secure the joint with a wooden or metal wedge driven into the slot at the top of the handle. The wedge forces the wood fibres apart, preventing the head from slipping off.

Beech must be protected from moisture - prolonged exposure to water makes it swell and lose strength. After use, clean any dirt off the handle and store it in a dry place. Periodic treatment with linseed oil is recommended, as it protects the wood from drying out and cracking.
