Yato YT-06804 Ratchet Brake Caliper Piston Spreader - 40-70 mm range

A workshop tool for the professional retraction of brake caliper pistons on cars and light commercial vehicles. The two-way ratchet mechanism delivers controlled piston retraction with minimal effort.

Working range40-70 mm
ActionTwo-way with ratchet
MaterialHardened carbon steel
Ratchet rotation360°

Technical features of the brake caliper spreader

Two-way ratchet mechanism

The two-way action spreads the pistons evenly from both sides of the caliper. This eliminates the risk of the piston jamming in the cylinder, which can happen when pressure is applied to one side only. The ratchet allows a high force to be generated with little effort from the operator.

40-70 mm working range

The adjustable jaw spacing handles brake calipers on most cars and light commercial vehicles. The range covers the single-, twin- and four-piston calipers fitted to popular European and Asian car models.

360° ratchet rotation

The ratchet handle can be positioned freely in any orientation, which makes work easier in the confined space of the wheel arch. This lets you use the tool comfortably whatever the position of the caliper relative to the body.

Hardened carbon steel construction

The hardening process increases the surface hardness of the working parts, preventing them from deforming under heavy load. The material retains its mechanical properties even after repeated use at full load.

Use in the vehicle workshop

  • Replacing brake pads on cars and light commercial vehicles
  • Brake caliper repair - retracting the pistons before fitting new seals
  • Brake system maintenance in multi-marque workshops
  • Bodywork jobs that require the brake system to be dismantled
  • Servicing multi-piston calipers on sports cars
  • Replacing brake discs where the pistons have to be wound back
  • Brake system diagnostics - checking that the pistons move freely
  • Working on calipers with an electric parking brake once it has been deactivated

How to check vehicle compatibility

Before use, measure the width of the brake caliper where the spreader jaws sit. Make sure the measurement falls within the 40-70 mm range. With calipers that have an electric parking brake, the system must first be put into service mode using a diagnostic tester.

Using and maintaining the spreader

Before starting work, open the brake fluid reservoir so that the fluid displaced by the retracting pistons can flow freely. Place the spreader jaws symmetrically on both sides of the caliper, pressing against the piston faces or the brake pads. Turning the ratchet handle spreads the jaws gradually.

While working, keep an eye on the fluid level in the reservoir - excess fluid may overflow. When the job is done, clean any brake fluid residue and dirt off the spreader jaws. The ratchet mechanism needs periodic lubrication with technical grease at the moving points.

Safety notes

Do not use the spreader to retract pistons in calipers with an active electric parking brake unless the system has first been deactivated. This may damage the electric mechanism. For calipers with threaded pistons, a specialist tool with a winding function is required.
