Carpenter's Axe 28" 1,350g TVARDY T02-004

A 28-inch carpenter's axe designed for precision joinery and carpentry work. Model T02-004, fitted with a 1,350 g head, provides the right balance between striking force and tool control when working timber.

Overall length710 mm
Head weight1,350 g
Head height90 mm
Head width145 mm

Technical features

710 mm (28") length

The handle length follows the 28-inch standard, which provides sufficient leverage for carpentry work. This length allows controlled strikes while retaining the force needed to work harder timber species.

1,350 g head

A head weight of 1,350 g strikes a balance between light and heavy tools. It is sufficient for cutting and levelling structural timber, while still allowing hours of work without excessive fatigue.

Head dimensions 90×145 mm

A blade height of 90 mm and a width of 145 mm provide an adequate working surface for precision cuts. The proportions of the head allow both cutting along the grain and cross-grain levelling of timber components.

Carpentry design

A carpenter's axe features a flat blade and a distinctive head shape suited to precision work. The geometry of the tool allows timber surfaces to be levelled and carpentry joints to be cut.

  • Removing bark and squaring the edges of logs
  • Trimming and fitting timber components on site
  • Joinery work in solid wood furniture production
  • Restoration and maintenance of timber structures

Choosing a carpenter's axe

When choosing a carpenter's axe, the ratio of handle length to head weight is crucial. The 1,350 g model with a 710 mm handle is the universal option for most carpentry work. Lighter models (850–1,000 g) are well suited to finishing work, while heavier ones (2,150–2,400 g) are used for working thick structural components. The width of the head determines the maximum width of cut in a single pass.

Use and maintenance

Before starting work, check that the head is secure on the handle. A loose head is a hazard and must be wedged immediately. The blade of a carpenter's axe needs regular sharpening at an angle of around 25–30 degrees, which ensures adequate penetration of the timber while preserving the durability of the cutting edge.

After work, clean resin and moisture from the blade and protect it with a thin film of oil. Storing the tool in a dry place prevents corrosion of the steel. The wooden handle can be periodically treated with linseed oil, which increases its resistance to moisture and prevents cracking.

During use, the axe should be guided in a controlled manner, making use of the natural weight of the tool. Forcing the strikes excessively blunts the blade more quickly and increases the risk of damaging the handle. When working with hard timber, shallower cuts are recommended.
