A splitting axe with a head weight of 1600 grams and a 60 cm handle, designed for the efficient splitting of firewood and stove wood. This model is fitted with a hardened tool steel head and a steel wedge that increases splitting effectiveness.
The head is made from steel with a hardness of 47-55 HRC and undergoes a hardening and tempering process. This process ensures a durable edge while maintaining a tough core, which minimises the risk of cracking during intensive use. A hardness of 47-55 HRC is the optimum compromise between wear resistance and resistance to brittle fracture.
The integrated steel wedge positioned behind the cutting edge acts as a spreader. Once the blade has bitten into the wood, the wedge mechanically forces the fibres apart, significantly reducing the force required to split the log completely. This solution is particularly effective with hard wood species.
The reinforced nylon shaft offers high resistance to impact and cracking compared with wooden equivalents. The rubberised TPR (thermoplastic elastomer) coating provides a non-slip grip even with damp hands and minimises the vibration transmitted to the hands on impact.
The curved cutting edge profile complies with DIN 7287, which defines the blade geometry of splitting axes. The gentle curve ensures progressive penetration into the wood and effective widening of the split, unlike the sharper angles used on general-purpose axes.

A splitting axe has a thicker blade with an angle of 30-40 degrees and a heavier head (1200-2500 g), which makes it ideal for splitting along the grain. A general-purpose axe has a sharper blade (20-30 degrees) and a lighter head (600-1200 g), and performs better for chopping and working across the grain.
Before first use, check that the head is correctly seated on the shaft. When working, the axe requires a stable surface such as a log or chopping block on which to place the log being split. Splitting directly on the ground or concrete causes accelerated blade wear.
A weight of 1600 grams with a length of 60 cm provides sufficient kinetic energy for users of different builds. A longer shaft (70-90 cm) increases striking force but requires more working space and better coordination.
After use, clean resin and dirt from the head and protect the blade with a thin layer of oil against corrosion. The nylon handle requires no special maintenance beyond removing dirt. Periodically check the condition of the head's attachment to the shaft.
Splitting axes do not require as sharp an edge as general-purpose models. An overly sharp edge is more likely to chip and to become stuck in the wood instead of splitting it. It is advisable to maintain a slightly rounded cutting edge, sharpened with a file or angle grinder at an angle of 30-35 degrees.
