Chainsaw File Guide with 4.5mm Round File YT-85031 YATO

A file guide with a round file is a tool for hand-sharpening the chains of petrol and electric chainsaws. The 4.5mm file diameter matches 3/8" and 0.325" pitch chains, used on most domestic and semi-professional chainsaws.

File diameter4.5 mm
Compatible chains3/8", 0.325"
File length250 mm
MaterialBearing steel

Features of the chainsaw sharpening file guide

Guide with angle markings

The guide has marked sharpening angles that help you keep the correct tilt of the file relative to the chain cutter. This ensures even sharpening of every cutter and preserves the chain's factory settings.

Round file made from bearing steel

Bearing steel is characterised by high hardness and wear resistance. The file stays sharp for longer than standard carbon tool steel files, which means more sharpening cycles before it needs replacing.

Clip-on handle fitting

The clip system lets you quickly remove the handle from the guide and swap a worn file for a new one. This removes the need for extra tools to take the parts apart and put them back together.

Ergonomic polypropylene handle

The plastic handle gives a steady grip during work and does not slip in the hand. Polypropylene is resistant to the oils and fuels present when working with chainsaws.

Uses of the sharpening file guide

  • Sharpening 3/8" and 0.325" pitch chains on petrol chainsaws
  • Sharpening chains on electric chainsaws with low-profile chains
  • Chain maintenance at home and in the workshop
  • Forestry work requiring frequent sharpening of cutting tools
  • Keeping chains sharp in garden maintenance and landscaping businesses
  • Preparing chains before the heating season
  • Sharpening chains after work in demanding conditions (sand, stones, frozen wood)

How to check the chain pitch

The chain pitch is the distance between three consecutive rivets divided by two, measured in inches. This value is usually stamped on the depth gauges or given in the chainsaw manual. 3/8" and 0.325" chains are the most common standards on chainsaws up to 3.5 hp.

Use and maintenance

Before sharpening, clean the chain of dirt, resin and oil. Place the guide on the chain so that the file sits in the hollow of the cutting tooth. Stroke the file from the inside out, keeping the tilt angle set by the guide constant.

Sharpen every tooth with the same number of file strokes so that all the cutting links stay the same length. After work, clean the file with a wire brush to remove metal filings and protect it from moisture.

How often to replace the file

A round file needs replacing after sharpening around 5-8 chains, depending on their condition and how blunt they are. A worn file loses its teeth and no longer removes material effectively, which lengthens sharpening time and lowers the quality of the cutting edge.
